Gloria Kitchen began the Thomas R. Kitchen Memorial Foundation in 2010 after years of fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, It was her dream to establish her own foundation in memory of her brother Thomas, who succumbed to the disease in 1996 at the age of 31.
Unfortunately, also in 2010, Gloria began experiencing chronic rejection of her transplanted lungs after almost 15 terrific years post-transplant. In November of 2010, Gloria courageously lost her battle. THe name of the foundation has been changed to honor her memory as well as her brother's.
Every fall, foundation supporters gather for cystic fibrosis fundraising with a dinner/auction for research. Because this foundation has no offices, no employees, and is entirely run by family, friends, and other volunteers, overhead is kept extremely low. We want every dollar we raise to fund research to fight cystic fibrosis.
Since 2010, over $250,000 has been donated directly to a cystic fibrosis research center.
Since Gloria Kitchen began her fundraising efforts in 1996, new and improved CF therapies have lengthened the median age of survival for CF patients from 30 to 37 years old. The FDA has recently approved drugs to treat the underlying causes of cystic fibrosis for patients with certain mutations of the disease, but other patients are still waiting for research breakthroughs. Your support is positively affecting their quality of life and longevity.
